George Brown Goode   Catalog:  Historic Images of the Smithsonian Title:  George Brown Goode Date:  c. 1880s Author/Creator:  Unknown Contained In:  Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 95, Box 9, Folder: 28B Summary:  George Brown Goode (1851-1896), Assistant Secretary in charge of the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution from 1887 to 1896. This photograph of Goode shows him sitting, looking directly at the camera with his left hand in his pocket. Goode was an ichthyologist, or fish specialist by training. Goode joined the staff of the Smithsonian to assist with preparations for exhibits at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and eventually became one of the leading figures in American museum theory and practice.
